Ethiopia Gibe III Dam

A group of international campaigners has launched an online petition against Ethiopia’s huge Gibe III dam project.

The group wants to put pressure on Western donors and banks not to fund the dam, saying it would destroy the livelihoods of some 500,000 people.

Siraj Gena wins Rome.

ROME - Siraj Gena of Ethiopia sprinted barefoot to the finish line to win the Rome marathon on Sunday, pulling away from two Kenyan rivals near the end.

Gena took off his shoes with about 500 metres left near the Colosseum and then sprinted away from Benson Barus and Nixon Machichim to finish in two hours, eight minutes, 39 seconds… more

Kenenissa wins 10,000 in Berlin.

Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia won the men’s 10000-meter race at the IAAF World Championships in 26:46.31. Zersenay Tadese set the pace for most of the race, and tried unsuccessfully to break away from the defending world champion over the final laps. More…

Ethiopian Airlines 25th Most Profitable airline.

According to Air Transport World (ATW July 2009), Ethiopian Airlines ranks as the 25th most profitable airline in the world, based on net profit. Ethiopian is the only African carrier in the top 25 airlines in the world based on net profit. In 2008, the airline had a net profit of $51,803,000. The most profitable airline based on Net profit in the world is FedEx followed by Qantas Group and Lufthansa, the ranking includes both passenger and freight operators. Continued…

Holyfield to fight Ethiopia exhibition bout in July.

Former world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield will fight an exhibition match in Ethiopia in July to help raise funds for AIDS victims, promoters announced Friday. The 46-year-old will take on Ethiopian-born American Sammy Retta in Addis Ababa on July 26, in what will be the Horn of Africa nation’s first ever showpiece boxing bout. Tylor Perrys new Ethiopian Girlfriend

After moving with her family to the United States as a young child, Gelila spent most of her childhood in San Francisco. She attended Roosevelt Middle School and Thurgood Marshall High School, where she was an honors student and a member of the school’s basketball team. She then spent two years studying at Cornell University before transferring to the University of California at Berkeley to be closer to her family. She graduated with a bachelors degree in 2005. Gelila currently lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Alleged bomb plot foiled at Springbrook High School

Police say two Springbrook High School students plotted to set off explosives in the Silver Spring school, assault a school counselor and principal and set off an explosion using the school’s natural gas lines, after allegedly sending the school a threatening e-mail on April 20, the 10-year anniversary of the massacre at Columbine High School.

The King of Ethiopian Music Dies.

The popular Ethiopian singer, Tilahun Gessesse, has died at the age of 68.
He had been the most dominant figure in Ethiopian music for more than half a century and will receive a state funeral later this week.

He started singing in the days of the Emperor Haile Selassie, and was for a time the lead singer in his imperial bodyguard band.

The BBC’s Elizabeth Blunt in Addis Ababa says that over the years, his plaintive tenor voice sang of love, family and friendship, as well as the more public themes of liberty, unity and justice.

He had been in poor health in recent years because of diabetes.

Two Ethiopian -Americans to watch

Two Ethiopian-Americans are profiled as among the Ten Young Black Obama Aides to Watch by The Root magazine. Yohannes Abraham is a 23 year old Yale graduate who played a pivotal role in Obama’s campaign victory in Virginia. He was field director for the Virginia campaign and now works at the White House, as Assistant to the Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs. Continued…

One of Liya Kebede’s proudest achievements came in the mail. Among the bills and catalogs was an envelope with designs for the tags to be sewn into every garment made by Lemlem, her new children’s-wear line. R&B singer Wayna arrested at Houston airport

On stage, a collapsible police baton is a distinct prop for  R&B singer Wayna when she sings about police brutality in Billieclub. But on the grounds of a Houston airport, the Grammy-nominated artist  learned Wednesday, the instrument is a definite no-no.

When the DC-area performer tried to board a plane in Houston with the baton, she  was arrested and charged with carrying a weapon, a club, in an airport.

Harris County District Attorney spokeswoman Donna Hawkins said Wayna Wondwossen was charged with the third-degree felony and given a $5,000 bond. Further details, including which airport the singer was at and whether she had made bail were not available late Wednesday. Continued…

First Elected Ethiopian-American Judge

Born in Ethiopia, Nina came to the U.S. as a young girl and was raised by her late father Professor Ashenafi Kebede.

Judge Nina, a mother of two, who is married to former State Legislator Curtis Richardson, was also the the first African-American woman to head the Tallahassee Bar Association and the first African-American to lead the Tallahassee Women Lawyers (TWL). Continued…

Coca Cola bottling plant in Ethiopia shut down

For the first time in nearly half a century, bottlers of Coca-Cola and sister beverage brands closed their plant on Thursday, March 12, 2009, sending 1,000 workers on a forced annual leave, but with full pay.

The plant, located in Addis Abeba on Dejazmach Balcha Aba Nefso Street, and one of the two operated by East Africa Bottling Share Company(EABSC), was closed after instructions given last week to the Acting General Manager, Izan Bombom. The management told Fortune that the closure would be “temporary;” however, no one seems to know when production will resume. Continued…
